Volkswagen has announced plans to return with two new natural gas-powered Scirocco racers. The cars will be powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged CNG engine which produces about 300 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque. Based on the traditional 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine, the CNG version features several modifications to ensure that it fully utilizes the high-octane natural gas for maximum performance. While Volkswagen doesn’t want to tip off fellow competitors by releasing performance figures, they did say that the new engine reduces CO2 emissions by 25 percent compared to conventional engines.
The Scirocco GT24-CNG racers will be driven by a host of professional drivers including Peter Terting, Thomas Klenke, former DTM driver Vanina Ickx, and two-time winner of the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, Klaus Niedzwiedz. Volkswagen will also field three 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol-powered Scirocco GT24 racers in an attempt to improve upon last year’s already stellar success.
