Toyobaru might be going for Tokyo Motor Show?

As recently as February, the Toyota/Subaru sports car was declared dead, a week later it was back on, a few weeks after that there were rumblings that it would be at this year's Tokyo Motor Show. Japan's Best Car magazine is apparently reporting that the little car will definitely be revealed in Japan. The news makes some sense, as this year's show will be well down on foreign automaker participation, so it's reasonable that local makers will want to take advantage of the dedicated attention to their wares.

Assuming the Toyobaru does show up, it will supposedly sit alongside the production Lexus LF-A and the hybrid 2011 Toyota Supra concept. Now if we could just make sure there's a new NSX there...

2011 Toyota/Subaru Compact FR Sports

From the source, the Japanese car magazines (Best Car and Holiday Auto in particular), renders are aways included in the article to give the reader an idea of what the final car could look like. Toyota has decided on the final shape of the compact FR sports car and that it will have a "wonderful style", in an attempt to change peoples opinions of Toyota and its bland image.

A 2.0L four cylinder boxer engine from the Impreza with 190ps and 21.0kg/m of torque is powered this car. With the low positioning of the boxer engine Toyota hopes to achieve a low center of gravity which in turn will dictate the low profile of the body, making it a sleek and attractive FR sports car. Weight is expected to be around 1200kg, so even with a moderate output from the 2.0L engine, performance is expected to appeal to younger buyers who are looking at an entry level sports car. For the transmission, a 6-speed gearbox will be offered initially with an automatic transmission being offered later. Besides that, an open top version will also offer later.

With the Legacy's platform, the compact FR sports car will also retain the Subaru's suspension, struts up front and multi links at the back. The platforms 4WD origins may affect the compact FR sports cars ultimate handling ability as being one of the major cost-cutting exercises, only minor changes to the geometry are expected to be carried out. Turning a 4WD platform into an FR one may not be ideal, but it seems it's more a case of using what's available.

2011 Subaru / Toyota RWD Coupe Spy Shot

Recently there are some spy shots of the Subaru and Toyota joint-developed rear-wheel-drive coupe. This yet unnamed coupes will be based on an all-new platform with power coming from Subaru’s range of boxer engines.

Needless to say that we can’t make any assumptions about the coupe’s appearance from the test mule pics. However, since both coupes are slated to enter production in 2011, expect a Toyota and Subaru concept version to appear sometime in 2009 with the production version making its official appearance in a major car show in 2010.
