Mercedes SLS AMG Desert Gold and G 55 AMG

Mercedes has announced plans to introduce the SLS AMG Desert Gold and the G 55 AMG Edition 79 at the Dubai Motor Show.

The Desert Gold features an attention-grabbing exterior with a matt gold paint scheme, gloss black accents, and black AMG wheels which measure 9.5 x 19 at the front and 11.0 x 20 at the rear. Inside, the car boasts sports seats, a solid carbon-fiber center console, and various other carbon fiber accents.

Like the standard SLS AMG, the Desert Gold is powered by a 6.3-liter (6208cc) V8 engine that produces 563 hp and 650 Nm of torque. It enables the car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 317 km/h (197 mph).

While the Desert Gold will not go into production, Mercedes stated "...given sufficient customer demand, this special gold paint finish could become available as an individual optional extra."

On the other hand, the G 55 AMG Edition 79 will be built exclusively for the Middle East. Named after the year the G-Class went into production (1979), the Edition 79 features a matt "designo magno alanite grey" paint job, a font crash bar, 19-inch AMG wheels, and chrome accents. For the interior, Mercedes added two-tone (black and sand) designo leather seats, carbon-fiber trim, and an individually numbered Edition 79 badge. Production will be limited to 79 units.

Mercedes SLS AMG “Race Version”

The Mercedes SLS is probably one of the most dramatic new cars of this year. Its design may be reminiscent of yesteryears but it’s in no way an old classic. The gull-wing doors and long sweeping hood are design cues carried over from the SL of the 50’s but everything else about it is modern in every sense of the word.

Its design also immediately makes it a favourite among tuners but there’s a high chance that we will never see one particular version of it – a race model. Knowing that, designer Matt Clark of Mattro Design came up with his own interpretation of how a racing SLS would look like.

In his words, the race SLS started off stock but has some traits of the 50’s race version, but instead of the triangular paint scheme above the headlights being non-functional, they are actually unpainted carbon fiber
vents. Also modified for race use are the headlights, fascia, grille, side exit exhausts, race mirrors, spoiler and of course, the addition of ground effects and the removal of the aesthetic vent gills.

The motivation behind the rendering? In Matt’s words, “They’ll probably never make a race version, but hey…it never hurts to hope.”
